For the maternal grandmother, one says anneanne (mothermother) in Turkish, as if the word itself carries the mother's projections onto her own mother. Taking these projections and other fragments that are left after a grandmother passes away: The diaries, photo albums, sewing machine, coffee cup readings, blouses, embroidered clothes, food recipes become the touchstones of the memories surrounding her. These fragments become instruments of a melody over mourning that questions the linearity of time.

Yüreğim kabarmış ama, arkası aydınlık (My heart is swelling, but what lies behind is bright)  consists of a hand-dyed and embroidered textile installation with video-mapping projected across the hanging textiles.  Resonating with the tradition of taseography in the artist’s family, the installation creates connections between non-coherent artefacts left behind after a grandmother, where the artefacts serve as material touchstones of mourning  after her death. These material and immaterial artefacts are perceived both as abstract images inside the coffee-cup and as part of the interviews and found footage between grandmother mother daughter. The work conceptualizes the word “cut” in its diverse meanings: cutting food, cutting textile, cutting a film, and stitching them back together.
